Daum embraces an environmentally-friendly and equitable approach by using bio-ore in the production of this leatherback turtle scuplture. To meet the major challenges of sustainable development, Daum is committed to an ethical approach to metal sourcing, which is necessary for the coloring of the crystal.
With the motivation to combine technical mastery and sustainable development, Daum’s Nancy atelier collaborates with local biotechnology startup Econick to obtain bio-sourced metals, produced from hand-grown plants, without deforestation, without the use of pesticides, equitable for local populations, wile enhancing the soil by increasing its ferility.
Daum wishes to highlight our present ecological crisis by choosing the leatherback turtle, an endagered species. One of the largest species of turtles and present in all the oceans of the planet, the survival of the leatherback turtle is seriously threatened by pollution and urbanization.
Since 1878, Daum has created world renown art pieces out of their crystal studio in Nancy, France. Every crystal piece by Daum is signed with “Daum France” to signify its origin and quality. Pâte de cristal is a Daum speciality; a precious material that gives their creations a sculptural depth and dimension, which has been refined unceasingly over time. Pâte de cristal has the quality of giving translucency to the forms it reproduces and the brilliance of this material, the intensity of colors and the myriad subtile shades all contribute to Daum’s unique methods.
